Transport history, railway technology, railway construction, railway culture as well as the interaction of the mountain railway in connection with nature with a unique embedding of the railway line in the incomparable landscape: the Landwasser Viaduct and the Rhaetian Railway create an impression.

The core zone from Albula to Bernina has been creating unforgettable landscapes with its viaducts since 1903. This is the highest Alpine transversal and one of the steepest adhesion railways in the world.

Landwasser Viaduct

The Landwasser Viaduct between Filisur and Schmitten is particularly impressive. At 65 metres high and about twice the span, it is unique in the world. In the years before its opening in 1903, the construction cost just 280,000 CHF and was completed in 18 months.

The Landwasser Viaduct can be seen from afar on the journey from Alvaneu. First, the train travels over the Schmittener-Tobel Viaduct, which is also of considerable size. In the curve on the bridge, you can watch the train travel into the Landwasser Tunnel. The railway line from Davos to Filisur joins the Tiefencastel line shortly before the station and gives travelers a view of the structure from the northeast.

Access

A footpath branches off from the Alvaneu-Filisur road at the bridge over the Landwasser, which takes you to the foundation of the viaduct in ten minutes. Parking is available. Three viewing and photo points are marked.
