The Gola Gorropu (Sardinian: Gorropu , Italian: Gola di Gorropu ) is one of Sardinia's most impressive natural landscapes. The gorge lies in the Supramonte Mountains, within the municipalities of Urzulei and Orgosolo in the province of Nuoro. With rock walls reaching up to 500 meters high, it is one of the deepest gorges in Europe.
The Gola Gorropu was formed by the erosive power of the Riu Flumineddu river over millennia, whose waters shaped the massive limestone of the Supramonte and created a dramatic, almost vertical gorge landscape.
Location and access
The entrance to the gorge is located about 18 kilometers south of Dorgali. A winding road branches off the SS 125 coastal road, leading down into the Valle di Oddoene. The drive is approximately 11 kilometers, followed by a roughly 7-kilometer hike that takes about an hour and a half along the Riu Flumineddu riverbed into the gorge. The trail offers varied scenery and runs partly through shady forests, providing welcome respite from the heat, especially during the summer months.
Landscape and nature
The Gorropu Gorge is impressive for its limestone walls, some vertical and some even overhanging, which in some places are only a few meters apart. Inside the gorge, a unique microclimate prevails: holm oaks, a constant breeze, and shady areas ensure pleasant temperatures even on hot days. The gorge also provides habitat for a diverse range of flora and fauna, especially numerous bird species that find ideal nesting sites in the rock faces.
The canyon floor is characterized by scree slopes and enormous boulders that have tumbled down the walls over time. Water collects in hollows and small pools, further enlivening the stark yet fascinating scenery.
Vicinity
In the immediate vicinity of the Gola Gorropu are other geological features of the Supramonte, including the largest doline in Sardinia, Su Suercone, and the deepest karst cave on the island, Su Sterru. Together they form a unique natural ensemble that makes the Gola Gorropu one of the most spectacular natural monuments in Sardinia.
