The church is world-famous, especially because of its exceptionally decorated church ceiling. There was already a settlement in Zillis in Roman times and the first church was built on this site around the year 500. The current church was first mentioned in 831.

Legends and ceiling paintings

The ceiling artwork from the High Romanesque period at the beginning of the 12th century is particularly spectacular. 153 square panels tell the stories of scenes on the water. Mythical creatures and hybrids as well as sea monsters symbolically represent the origin of evil in the water. Standing on solid ground, angels as personifications of the winds and heralds of the Last Judgement are arranged in all corners. Other scenes show King David, Solomon and Rehoboam and are alluding to the Three Kings. Images from the Old Testament such as the flight to Egypt or the massacre of the children in Bethlehem are followed by the baptism and miracles of Jesus.

Access

The church is accessible for a small fee. It is also worth visiting the village museum.
