On the northern shore of Lake Iseo lies one of the most beautiful small towns in northern Italy: Lovere . Nestled between water and mountains, the town resembles a natural amphitheater. Behind the historic houses, the peaks of the Bergamasque Alps rise steeply, while in front of the town, the sparkling blue of the lake unfolds.
Lovere belongs to the association I borghi più belli d'Italia – the most beautiful villages of Italy – and enchants visitors with medieval streets, elegant palazzi and a relaxed atmosphere that is often missing at the more famous northern Italian lakes.
A walk through the old town
The heart of Lovere beats on the waterfront promenade around Piazza XIII Martiri . Cafes, small restaurants and historic facades characterize the harbor, where fishing boats and sailboats bob gently in the water.
From here, the path leads up through the old Beccarie quarter. The narrow streets, stone arches, and small squares tell of the city's long history. Finally, you reach the elegant Piazza Vittorio Emanuele II in the historic center. Above the square rises the old city tower with its large clock, which has set the rhythm of the place for centuries.
The winding alleys of the medieval old town converge around the piazza. Wandering aimlessly here reveals small courtyards, flower-adorned balconies, and breathtaking views of the lake.
Art treasures above the lake
Continuing up the slope, you will reach the Church of San Giorgio . The church houses numerous important works of art and is one of the city's cultural highlights.
Particularly impressive is the Accademia Tadini , housed in a magnificent neoclassical palazzo right on the lake. The gallery boasts one of the region's most important art collections and displays works by great Italian artists such as Antonio Canova , Jacopo Bellini , Giandomenico Tiepolo , and Francesco Hayez .
In addition to classical paintings and sculptures, a department for modern and contemporary art has also been established in recent years – an exciting contrast to the historical backdrop of the city.
Renaissance on Lake Iseo
Elegant villas and historic palazzi line the lakeside promenade. The Basilica di Santa Maria in Valvendra, dating from 1473, is particularly impressive.
The church is considered one of the most beautiful Renaissance buildings in Lombardy, combining Lombard architecture with Venetian influences. Inside, richly decorated marble elements, artistic sculptures, and a magnificent high altar impress visitors. The light streaming through the tall windows lends the basilica an almost solemn tranquility.
Between tradition and industry
Despite its historical charm, Lovere is not just a romantic holiday destination. The town also boasts a long industrial tradition. Since the 19th century, the steel industry has shaped the region's economic life. Even today, Lucchini RS operates a significant steelworks on the lakeshore.
It is precisely this combination of history, art, and industry that makes Lovere so unusually authentic. The place doesn't feel like an open-air museum, but rather like a vibrant Italian small town with its own distinct identity.
The Legend of the Bells in the Lake
The inhabitants of Lovere have told an old legend about Lake Iseo for centuries. According to the legend, a small village with a magnificent church once stood on the spot where the water is now particularly deep and dark.
One night, a violent storm swept across the mountains. Thunder shook the valley, and suddenly the village, along with its church, sank into the lake. Only the bell tower briefly protruded from the waters before it too disappeared.
Even today, fishermen and old residents claim that on quiet nights one can hear the ringing of the sunken bells from the depths – especially when fog lies over the water.
A place to linger.
Lovere is not a place you can visit quickly. The town unfolds its charm slowly – during a stroll along the promenade, while gazing at the mountains, or enjoying a glass of wine in a small bar by the harbor.
Those who visit Lake Iseo will discover one of the most elegant and atmospheric cities in Lombardy – a place full of history, art and quiet beauty.
