The Hüttwilersee is located close to the Nussbaumersee and the Hasensee. Originally, the area around the three lakes was a moorland with little forest.

The three Hutwil lakes are home to rare flora and fauna. Tree frogs and great crested newts are endangered in Switzerland due to the loss of natural habitats. They can still be found here. Several beaver families also live around the lakes. Their tracks are clearly visible. If you're lucky, you might see a grass snake or encounter red-backed shrikes and reed buntings.

The ring in the fish

Above the village of Hüttwilen (south of Eschenz) there used to be a large castle in which counts lived who cruelly oppressed the people. The last of these tyrants was a real oppressor; he chased the farmers from their farms, rode right through their fields and meadows and laughed at them scornfully when they rebelled. As he came down to the lake one day, he pulled a heavy gold ring from his finger and said to his entourage: "I am now throwing this ring into the lake - and as certain as it is that I will never get the ring back, no one can steal my property and my power from me." With that, he threw the ring into the deep water and rode home again. A year later, a fisherman's apprentice brought a fish to the castle. When they were preparing it, they found the ring that the count had thrown into the lake in its stomach when they cut it up. The count turned deathly pale with horror. The next night, several bands of soldiers appeared in front of the castle, led by a knight who had been at war with the tyrant for a long time. They killed the count without mercy and reduced his castle to rubble and ashes. The next day, at prayer time, an army of terrible figures rode down from the ruined castle, making a terrible noise and constantly shouting: "Out of the way, out of the way, so that we don't burn anyone!" They were the evil counts, who since then have had to go around the castle every evening until the prayer bell rings.

Access

There are parking spaces between the two lakes or at the eastern end of the Hüttwilersee and the western end of the Nussbaumersee. A hike around the two lakes takes about two and a half hours.
