The great Aletsch glacier is the largest ice stream in the Alps. The sight of archaic beauty on over 23 kilometers of ice is impressive. The most fascinating view is from the Hohfluh, the Bettmerhorn or the Eggishorn. The view from the Jungfraujoch on the Bernese side of the glacier is also magnificent. The ice flows from over 4000 meters above sea level into the Massa Gorge, around 2500 meters below.

trips

You can get particularly close to the eternal ice on a glacier tour. The safest way to get around is on a guided tour. The Bettmerhorn Ice World exhibition and the Pro Natura Center in Aletsch are also worth a visit. The Eggishorn circular trail will also be opened in August 2016. The Aletsch Forest with its beautiful Swiss stone pines is located at a particularly high altitude. The glacier side moraine is very clearly visible on the moraine trail.

Facts

The glacier is over 23 km long and is the largest ice stream in the European Alps. Its surface area is 86 km2, which is as large as the city of Chur. Despite the shrinkage, the glacier, with its more than 900 meters of ice, weighs as much as 70 million jumbo jets and moves between 200m/year at Konkordiaplatz and 90m/year at the height of the Aletsch forest.
