The gently undulating Jura plateau in Aargau around the Bözberg Pass reveals a spectacular feature. Near Linn there is a lime tree that has defied the test of time for more than 800 years. With a height of 25 meters and a trunk circumference of eleven meters, it is considered the mightiest tree in Aargau and one of the oldest trees in Switzerland. When you look at the monumental tree, you can feel the passage of time and hear the stories that the lime tree tells. Many even speak of a place of power where you can rediscover your inner energy.

The linden tree is located right on the edge of Linn and is not only a beautiful sight and a popular photo subject, but also the starting point for various hikes through the cultural landscapes of the Bözberg. Among other things, the Linn nature and culture trail starts here, which leads through the orchid-rich Sagenmühlital.

Legend and saga

Legend has it that the linden tree was planted on the grave of the last Linn resident in 1668 by one of the last remaining villagers to commemorate the plague. Since then, the linden tree has been a guarantee that the plague will not break out again. The plague raged particularly violently in the village of Linn in the 16th/17th century. The actual age of the linden tree is much older, estimated at around 800 years. The fact that the linden tree has burned down several times and then recovered indicates its strong desire to protect.

Another legend threatens that the world will end if one day the linden tree no longer casts its shadow once a year on the Habsburg Castle, the ancestral seat of the dynasty of the same name: «If the linden tree does not bring its head to Ruedeli's house, then everything will be over» (by «Ruedeli» Rudolf von Habsburg is meant).

poem

Oh green linden, my sweetheart,
in your bright reflection
there on the bench, the old one,
we carved our names;
the sign of love remained.

So many poets praise you
and your crown of leaves;
That's why I sing too
now happy for you
a love song for reward.

Will praise your green faithfulness,
You are 800 years old,
blooms year after year,
delighted again
the hiker in your forest.

In every spring gentle smile,
shady branches in summer,
with floral scent and gentle fanning,
This is how you celebrate your jubilee.

In autumn, golden yellow and beguiling,
the leaf dress shines like taffeta;
and every leaf falls, gently imploring
the treasure of hidden life force

You will soon wear winter’s snow fur
and the frost glitter dress
and do not despair even in the storm.
Your dream of new spring days
is fulfilled after the quiet time.
