Hidden in the dense green of the Bodenwald forest, high above the shimmering waves of Lake Constance, lies a place steeped in history – the ruins of Altbodman Castle. The walls of this once-proud castle tell of knights and noble families, of lightning and fire, of destruction and reconstruction. Those who venture to this mysterious place are immersed in a world where nature and history magically combine.
The path to the ruins – a walk into the past
The climb to the Altbodman ruins is an experience in itself. A narrow forest path winds through dense trees, accompanied by birdsong and the rustling of leaves. The steep, spur-like outcrop on which the castle is built rises to an altitude of 627 meters and offers breathtaking views over Lake Überlingen. Up here, in the silence of nature, you can almost hear the echoes of past centuries.
A look into history
The castle's origins date back to the 12th century, when the Lords of Bodman established their stronghold here. However, its history is marked by dramatic events. In 1307, a devastating lightning strike destroyed the castle on what is now Frauenberg. While most of the noble family fell victim to the flames, one-year-old Johannes von Bodman was saved by a courageous act of his nurse – an event that remains enshrined in the family annals to this day.
The castle was rebuilt on a new site in 1332 and further expanded over the centuries. However, it too was not spared destruction. During the Thirty Years' War, Altbodman was razed by French troops and left in ruins.
The ruin today – a monument to times gone by
Despite the centuries, Altbodman has retained much of its former splendor. The imposing remains of the castle walls testify to its defensive strength, while the ruins of the tower house offer a glimpse into the site's strategic importance. Touching the ancient stones will allow you to feel the breath of history and imagine knights once walking through the castle, while traders and farmers sought shelter within its walls.
Today, the ruins are freely accessible and have been restored several times in recent decades. Thanks to extensive renovation work, Altbodman will be preserved for future generations – an impressive testament to medieval architecture.
A magical place for nature and history lovers
Altbodman is a worthwhile destination for hikers and history buffs. The mix of wild, romantic nature and historic walls makes the place unique. Those who want to delve deeper into the region's history after their visit can visit the nearby Bodman Castle or take a hike along the Seerücken ridge.
