Did you know that just minutes from Trento's city center lies a place that looks like it came straight out of a fairytale? The Orrido di Ponte Alto is a natural wonder carved deep into the rocks—a narrow, dramatic canyon with two mighty waterfalls plunging over 40 meters into its heart.

A spectacle of light, spray and thunder, created by the tireless work of the Torrente Fersina, which has been gnawing at the earth drop by drop for thousands of years.

A dance of water and stone

This mysterious chasm of red rock is not only a freak of nature, but also a monument to human ingenuity: As early as the 16th century, engineers built sophisticated hydraulic structures here to protect Trento from dangerous floods. The result? Two artificial waterfalls, which became a breathtaking natural spectacle amidst a primeval landscape.

And it's precisely this interplay of wild water and historic architecture that makes the Orrido di Ponte Alto so unique. Here, the power of nature meets human history – merging into a dramatic work of art that tells its own story with every drop.

Rediscovered after decades of silence

As early as the beginning of the 20th century, the canyon was a popular tourist destination for the people of Trento. But over time, the natural monument fell into oblivion – too dangerous, too inaccessible. In the 1980s, access was finally completely closed.

But then, in 2015, a quiet revival began: The path through the canyon was carefully restored, new safety measures were implemented, and today the Orrido di Ponte Alto is accessible again. However, only as part of guided tours, because visitor safety and the protection of this sensitive site are paramount.

The tours are not only informative, but can also be theatrically staged upon request – with drama, light, and sound, the history of the canyon comes to life. You'll encounter Renaissance engineers, water nymphs from ancient legends, or the spirit of Fersina herself, who rushes through the rocks.

How to get there

The Orrido di Ponte Alto is easier to reach than you might think: From Trento train station, take a suburban bus – and after about 30 minutes, you'll be at the entrance to the gorge. Alternatively, you can take the city bus to the Trento district of Cognola and walk the rest of the way in about ten minutes.

If you are traveling by car, it is best to park at the sports center in Via Ponte Alto in Cognola.

Important: Visiting the canyon is only possible after prior online booking via the official website. This ensures that only a limited number of guests are present at one time, making the visit all the more exclusive and immersive.

A place like from another world

The Orrido di Ponte Alto is more than just a day trip—it's a journey through time, a natural spectacle, a silent lesson in patience and strength. Here, the water speaks to the rocks, and if you listen carefully, perhaps to you too.

A place for dreamers , nature lovers and all those who seek the magic in the hidden.
