The Bhutan Bridge in Valais is much more than a suspension bridge - it is a symbol of connection, exchange and culture. Built on the Bhutanese model, it spans majestically over the Illgraben, also known as the "Grand Canyon of Valais". Its opening in 2005 was a visible sign of friendship between Switzerland and Bhutan.
A symbol of the International Year of Mountains
The year 2002 was declared the International Year of Mountains by the UN. This inspired Switzerland to implement projects to promote sustainable mountain regions together with Bhutan and the "Mountains 2002" association. One of these projects was the construction of the Bhutan Bridge, supported by the aid organization Helvetas, which has been supporting bridge construction in Bhutan for years.
More than just a bridge
The Bhutan Bridge is impressive not only because of its technical construction, but above all because of its symbolic power. It connects:
- The sides of the Illgraben: The two banks of the impressive gorge area.
- Upper Valais and Lower Valais: Two regions of Switzerland that are not only geographically, but also linguistically and culturally different.
- German and French: A bridge building for the language regions of Switzerland.
- Switzerland and Bhutan: A connection between two countries that promote mutual understanding and appreciation.
- Cultures and religions: The bridge is decorated with colorful prayer flags and Buddhist symbols.
- People: It invites locals and visitors alike to pause and enjoy the moment.

On the Upper Valais side, a square with a cross and a Buddhist chorte invites you to reflect – a wonderful mixture of tradition and Far Eastern spirituality.

It invites you to think about the connection between cultures, religions and people - and all this in the middle of one of the most beautiful landscapes in the Valais.
