background

The Mutzbachfall is the highest waterfall in the region and absolutely worth seeing. The shallow water of the stream is perfect for a refreshing footbath in summer and the picturesque spots on the banks invite you to linger. The Mutzbachhöhle is an adventure for children and you can wade through the cave barefoot to discover an untouched natural idyll directly behind it.

The Valley of the Last Bear

The legends and stories surrounding the Mutzbachgraben are as varied as they are fascinating. The people of Bern affectionately refer to the bears as "Mutzen", which is how the name Mutzbachgraben came about. Tradition has it that the last bear in the region once hid here, but that probably remains just an exciting legend.

One of the stories says that the bear, also called "Mutz", was hiding in a hell until he was finally shot. But as is often the case with such stories, this could just be a legend that further adds to the mystery and secrecy surrounding the Mutzbachgraben.

Another claim is that the water above the Mutzgraben has healing powers. Over 200 years ago there was even a bath that benefited from the mineral spring. Unfortunately, the use did not last long, as the bath was apparently visited naked, which was not tolerated by the authorities.

The Mutzbachgraben remains not only a place of natural beauty, but also a place shrouded in legends and secrets. A fascinating region that enchants its visitors with stories from times gone by.
