The Kaltbrunnental valley along the Ibach is richer in springs and caves than almost any other valley in Switzerland. The karst landscape repeatedly swallows streams in their sinkholes and allows them to spring up again somewhere else. This creates a cycle of creation and decay. Neanderthals used numerous caves in prehistoric times.

The Heidenküche and Kohlerhöhle

In the 19th century, John Benedikt Thiessing discovered stone tools in two caves in the Kaltbrunnental that dated back 24,000 years. In addition to hunting weapons, needles and jewelry, he also found fossilized mussels and snails that had their origins hundreds of kilometers away. The wild landscape and long history have given rise to numerous legends.

The Kaltbrunnental is an enchanting place, and not just because of the lush forest or the name of the next village: Himmelried. So dreamy and enchanting that it would not be surprising if a fairy appeared behind the mossy rocks.
