The path to the Farenbachtobel forest lake opens directly at the Farenhof outside of Elgg in the direction of Schlatt. A gorge landscape full of streams, a lake and various bridges invites you to marvel. The gorge is ideal for escaping the heat, as the stream offers a Kneipp stop. The dense forests also provide cooling shade. The easy path with a slight incline means that children and older people can also enjoy the path. Those who make it to the top are best rewarded with a cold beer in the Guhwilmühle restaurant, where the water wheel is no longer used to produce flour, but rather to turn many a suckling pig.
The area is full of stories and legends, especially on the other side of the cantonal border towards Thurgau…
The Luggenseelein
In the Heidelberg Forest between Aadorf and Weiern there is a small lake hidden away, which is connected to the Kehlhof pond to the west by underground rivulets. With the exception of the lowest point, there is rarely water in it; even heavy and persistent rain does not change this phenomenon. In winter the water does rise somewhat higher, but usually retreats back into its narrow area by May. However, when after a number of years the basin begins to fill up in a dry summer, concern enters the hearts of older residents of the area. They believe that this will be followed by a serious event, famine, war and other misfortunes. They anxiously follow the growth of the lake with staked rods. In 1847 a farmer from Wittenwil held back his grain because he expected an increase in prices and high grain prices in view of the sinking basin. And so it happened. The lake is said to have been full in 1816 as well, thus prophesying bad omens.
