The Glattalpsee has an area of 27.6 hectares and is located at an altitude of 1853 m above sea level. Although it is still in the eastern part of the canton of Schwyz, the region is already part of the Glarus Alps. The lake is fed by the Glattalpseebach, the Hinter Läckibach and the Vorderer Läckibach.
The little fox in the Glattalp
In Glattalp in Switzerland, two people from Uri, a married man and a handsome, single boy, went hunting. As they happened to look up through a "Teeltschi", they saw a little fox sitting motionless on a spot, looking down through the valley. The two hunters entered the valley and climbed up. To their surprise, the animal remained sitting quietly at its post and stared down at them. When they got very close, the single man said to the married man: "Hey, the little animal won't shoot me!" They went even closer and found it tied to a stone with a "Niälen". While it looked at the two people, wagging its tail in a friendly manner, they untied it and let it go.
In the same year a big festival was celebrated in Glarus, in which our two Urners also took part. While they were strolling through the beautiful, wide streets of the little town, a young, pretty woman suddenly called out to them from the window of a beautiful house and kindly invited them to come and stay with her. But only after repeated urging did they accept the invitation, were received with great kindness and lavishly entertained. Meanwhile the pretty daughter revealed herself: "I am the little fox that you untied up there on the Alp and set free. I owe you a great deal of gratitude, because you saved my life. My mother was an old witch and before she was burned alive she turned me into a little fox and banished me to the lonely Alp valley. But you need not be afraid of me because of that; I am not a witch myself, but an honest person and a Christian. I am very happy to see you here and to be able to host you.« And he shows them the red ribbon.
Later, the single man from Uri won the beautiful, rich young lady as his wife, and the two became a happy, Christian couple.
