Lake Cauma has become famous worldwide thanks to its turquoise-blue water, idyllic landscape and social media hype. The lake is located in the middle of the forest directly below Flims and can be reached on foot via a steep descent or by funicular. A hike to its little brother, Lake Cresta in the direction of Trin, is particularly worthwhile when it is not peak tourist season and a bit of the solitude of the past can be enjoyed.
Origin
The two lakes are located at around 900 to 1000 meters above sea level. The lakes were formed by the Flims landslide during the last ice age. The water seeped through the porous landslides. It can dissolve the lime with the help of the carbon dioxide it contains. Over time, this created an underground passage. A deeper, impermeable layer of clay ensures that the water does not completely penetrate the ground. This is also what creates this clear turquoise water. The water in the lakes is so clear that in the early nineteenth century people fished for pike with shot rather than with rods.
Healing effect
The water in the two bathing lakes has been said to have healing properties for centuries. This is why Flims became a health resort over a hundred years ago. The lake is said to speed up the healing process for skin and eye diseases as well as rheumatism. However, the healing effect is probably not due to the water, but rather to the tranquility and enchanting beauty of the two lakes.
Directions
The starting point for a leisurely hike is Trin Mulin, where there are a few parking spaces. The hike then takes you on a two-hour hike towards Lake Cresta and then on to Lake Cauma.
