Up to 6,000 liters of pure water spring from a cave opposite the village center of Jaun. This creates a special force field on the pass between the cantons of Bern and Fribourg.

background

15 kilometers further southwest, in a side valley of the highest Fribourg Prealps, the stream rises on the flank of the Vanil Noir at almost two thousand meters, until it is swallowed up by the ground after a few kilometers. The valley of Les Morteys is particularly pristine and beautiful.

In the 1920s, the water of the stream was dyed in order to explore its further course. Surprisingly, the water appeared at the Jaun waterfall.

The Jauner and the Wolf at the Bruchpass

In earlier times, in the Simmental and the surrounding area, there were still wolves here and there in cold, snowy winters, which even when they were hungry would attack people. Names such as Wolfsgarn, Wolfsort, Wolfsgraben, etc. still point to these times today. It was during one such harsh winter that a citizen from the neighboring village of Jaun in Freiburg came to Zweisimmen to do all sorts of shopping. Among other things, he bought kitchen utensils, a kettle, cans, ladles, and the like, tied everything together with a string, drank a glass or two of wine in the "Bären" to strengthen himself, and then hurried back on his way to the Bruchpass.

As he approached the top of the pass, he was horrified to see a wolf coming up the path behind him, showing great interest in taking a closer look. The man from Jaun, who was skeptical and afraid, began to cross himself, which he repeated more and more diligently in his fear as the wolf came ever closer and the danger grew. Suddenly the man from Jaun, who was more jumping than walking, lost his rope and his equipment, which fell to the ground with a clatter and noise and tumbled down the steep path. The wolf, frightened by the rattling, took off, and when the man from Jaun saw that he had nothing more to fear, he gathered up his belongings, continued on his way, calling out happily to himself: Rumpel de Gess (cauldron) et de Bix (gun) vaut mieux qu'une centaine de Kruzifix.
