In the southern Emmental towards Thun stands the more than 40-meter-high Chüderhüsi tower. The tower, lovingly constructed from silver fir, has 195 steps and rises precisely above the surrounding fir forest. This opens up the view over the entire Emmental and up to the 4000-meter peaks of the Alps. Jungfau, Eiger and Mönch seem close enough to touch. The barbecue area and the untouched nature are a perfect opportunity for a half-day excursion.

Dr Schwarz ir Sennhütte

After every summer, the Emmentalers were supposed to leave a cow on the alp. This way they could be spared from the winter disasters. Not all farmers were willing to accept this. One winter, a farmhand set out to fetch the remaining cow. He hiked up to the alp with his big dog. In the evening, he lit a fire, but it didn't really work. When he heard a scary noise, he bravely made his way to the kitchen where the noises had come from. There was no sign of the sounds of cheese-making that he had heard. But on the second attempt, a black figure emerged from the shadows. The black man asked if he would like something to eat and drink. The farmhand refused several times. The figure insisted and gave the dairyman a piece of meat.

The next morning, the farmhand saw that the cow was missing this very piece of its leg and was glad that he had not eaten any more. He took the cow and the dog by the leash and wanted to pull them down the valley. But at the gate, it became loud. There was thunder and howling. All the evil forces were gathering. The black man from the previous evening was there too. With great difficulty, the farmhand managed to save his animals and bring them down into the valley in a heroic fight.

Since then, the Alp has been freed from evil forces.
