The Rhine Gorge is one of those natural wonders whose appearance and size brings people back to their small, modest reality. The 13-kilometer-long gorge stretches between Illanz and Reichenau.

background

Around 10,000 years ago, a landslide occurred in Flims, releasing several billion cubic metres of rock. This buried the Vorderrhein valley. A lake was then dammed, which gradually drained through the gorge as the Rhine ate into the landslide masses.

The Erlentrögli

A stream springs up at the "Erlentrögli" on the way from Carrera to Versam. The stream is so rich in iron that it has healing powers. The water appears clear, but has a reddish tint. The village elders say that blood flows in the spring because a young man once murdered his brother in a stable on the Alp. The two fell in love with the same beauty and clashed until one killed the other.

Access

The Rhaetian Railway takes you through the Rhine Gorge. From the villages of Trin and Bonaduz you can reach the north or south side of the gorge on foot. Various viewpoints and towers are spread out along the entire route. Il Spir between Flims and Trin Mulin is particularly worth seeing.
