The southern part of the reservoir on the Reuss in front of Bremgarten is called Flachsee. At 72 hectares, it is one of the largest lakes located entirely in Aargau. From Rottenschwil to the Geisshof in Unterlunkhofen there is an extensive marshland with backwater and small islands. The Reuss once meandered here in numerous bends. The Rottenschwiler Moos on the edge of the Flachsee still shows the remains of these former river meanders.

The hydroelectric power station at Emaus in Zufikon was built in 1975 and from then on dammed the Flachsee. A magnificent nature reserve was formed. The floodplain landscape shows an artificially created world, but after so many years you can no longer speak of Disney nature. The view stretches from the Alps to the Jura.

Nature reserve

Around fifty species of birds, some of which have become very rare, breed at Flachsee. These include cormorants, little ringed plovers and kingfishers. Up to 240 species of birds have been registered in this region. A few years ago, even flamingos stopped at Flachsee. The tracks of the beavers that have settled here are also hard to miss.

Access

There are free parking spaces at the Rottenschwiler Bridge. From there you can walk around the Flachsee.
