The Blausee is located in the beautiful Kandertal and is definitely worth a detour when driving through to or from the Lötschberg. Close to Mitholz, the Blausee is not impressive because of its size. Rather, its azure blue color, the surroundings and the abundance of fish are reasons to visit.

Officially, the lake was formed by a rockfall more than 15,000 years ago and became increasingly popular after the Kandertal was opened up with the Lötschberg railway. Many people consider this scenic gem to be magical and in the off-season hikers can find peace and relaxation here.

Unofficially, the deep blue-green color comes from the blue eyes of a young girl who, out of grief over the death of her lover, went into the water and killed herself. Since then, the tears of the unfortunate woman have colored the lake deep blue.

A sculpture by Raffael Fuchs lying in the lake has commemorated this legend since 1998.

If you have more time than just a quick detour, you can fish for wonderful trout on the lake or go for a hike.
