The majestic Achensee, which rises north of Jenbach in Tyrol, lies a proud 380 metres above the Inn Valley and, together with the picturesque Achental, forms the natural border between the wild Karwendel Mountains in the west and the imposing Brandenberg Alps in the east.
With a depth of up to 133 meters, Lake Achensee is the largest and deepest lake in Tyrol. Its crystal-clear water, which is almost drinking water level, allows visibility of up to ten meters below the surface. But the cool, refreshing water temperature rarely exceeds 20 °C, making it a true mountain lake. Due to its impressive size and the perfect wind conditions for sailors and surfers, Lake Achensee is affectionately known as the "Tyrolean Sea".
On the southern shore of the lake lie the charming holiday resorts of the municipality of Eben am Achensee: the idyllic Pertisau, the historic Haus Seespitz, which once served as a hotel, and the picturesque villages of Maurach and Buchau. To the north lies the municipality of Achenkirch with its charming districts of Scholastika, the inviting hotel, and Achenseehof, known for its picturesque lido.
The Achensee, embedded in the breathtaking scenery of the Tyrolean Alps, invites you to an incomparable natural experience that makes the hearts of nature lovers, sports enthusiasts and those seeking peace and quiet beat faster.
Legend
According to an old legend, Lake Achensee was not created naturally, but on the spot where a splendid village once flourished. However, the inhabitants of this village lived in sin and debauchery, which ultimately led to their ruin. As punishment, powerful masses of water broke over the village until it sank in the flood and disappeared forever. This is how Lake Achensee is said to have been born, from the tears and ruin of that sinful settlement.
