The picturesque Lake Lauerz, which stretches between the majestic waters of Lake Lucerne and Lake Zug in the enchanting canton of Schwyz, reveals a fascinating beauty. This lake, which is one of the shallowest bodies of water in Switzerland and has a maximum water depth of just 14 meters, is harmoniously embedded between the idyllic villages of Steinerberg, the sublime Rigi and the imposing peaks of the Kleiner and Grosser Mythen.

background

During the summer months, Lake Lauerz with its gentle waves invites you to relax in the refreshing waters and feel the pleasant coolness of the water on your skin. There are also public lakeside bathing resorts along the lake that offer guests appropriate comfort, including the charming towns of Seewen, Lauerz and Steinen, which enrich the bathing experience on the lake shore with their charming facilities.

But when the icy cold of winter envelops the lake with its frosty magic, a very special spectacle unfolds. Mysterious bubbles of foul gas form beneath the frozen surface, which have sparked the curiosity and playfulness of local youth for decades. These fascinating bubbles are ignited by artfully drilled holes in the ice, creating a flickering spectacle that fills the winter landscape with an enchanting glow.

The ghost in the sail

Many years ago, a young resident of Steinen regularly took the path across the lake to Lauerz to see his lover. When he returned at midnight, he often saw a terrifying apparition that always stood in the same place. The creature was cloaked in white and moved its arms up and down. The young farmer was suspicious of this and one evening took his gun with him. When he encountered the figure again after midnight, he called out to it, invoking the three most holy names and ordered it: "Reveal yourself, or I will shoot!" As the ghost showed no reaction, the farmer shot it straight in the heart. The figure sank to the ground and the shooter discovered under the white cloth a wealthy farmer from Lauerz who wanted to buy the scattering site cheaply. The white cloak had turned into a shroud for him.
