Hünenberg Castle is located 440 meters southwest of Hünenberg in the canton of Zug. Between streams and in the middle of the forest, it seems inaccessible and abandoned today. Not least because of the picturesque surroundings, the ruins are always worth a visit and invite you to linger in the forest and the diverse stream landscape.

Story

The area was already fortified with an earth and wood structure in 1100. The castle was first mentioned in 1173. However, it is not entirely clear who owned the castle at that time. Possibilities include the people of Zug or a family from Hegnau. The first structure was destroyed by fire in the 12th century. It burned again around 1200. After that, a keep was built, which was also fireproof thanks to its megalithic technology. The castle was probably destroyed during the Battle of Sempach in 1386, when the Hünenbergs fought on the side of the Habsburgs.

Directions

There is a car park near the waterworks near the castle. From there it is a 10-minute walk through the forest and stream landscape. The castle is accessible at any time.
