Kyburg Castle stands high above the Töss in the village of the same name. This national cultural asset dates back to the eleventh century, when Liutfried II of Winterthur built the castle on the "Kuhberg", which is where the name "Kyburg" came from. In the battle with the Swabians, Count Werner and Ernst of Swabia fled to Kyburg. But their defeated stepfather recaptured the gem. After the Lenzburgs died out in 1173 and the Zähringers in 1218, their lands and sovereign rights passed to the House of Kyburg, which became one of the most important noble families between the Rhine and the Alps alongside the Habsburgs and the Savoys. In 1263, the Kyburgs died out. Their inheritance passed via Anna von Kyburg to the Counts of Habsburg-Laufenburg, who sold most of it to Rudolf von Habsburg.
Today the castle belongs to the canton of Zurich and houses a museum.
hikes
Starting in Sennhof, the trail goes along the Töss to the Töss bridge. Then it goes up steep steps to the Kyburg. If you like to hike further, you can hike from Kyburg towards Weisslingen to the edge of the village. Then it goes via Brünggen through field and forest paths over various ridges back to Sennhof. During the 3-hour hike, you can see the Kyburg from a variety of angles. In spring, the forests are full of wild garlic, in summer they are full of berries. In autumn, it is worth taking a mushroom basket with you!
