On a hill covered with lush forest in western Herisau, located in the lovely canton of Appenzell Ausserrhoden, the ruins of an old hilltop castle stand majestically: the Rosenburg. On the Ramsenstock, whose summit rises proudly at 926 meters above sea level and is located just a stone's throw away from the picturesque Ramsen, the former fortress shines in all its splendid past and is also affectionately known as Ramsenburg.
Story
The Rosenburg castle was built in the early 12th century - around 1150 to be precise. However, it was not mentioned in writing for the first time until many decades later, in 1270, when it was in the hands of the venerable Egilolve von Rosenburg.
The proud fortress served as the seat of the venerable Knights of Rorschach until it was sold to the prestigious Princely Abbey of St. Gallen in 1396. But fate was not kind to it: in the Appenzell War of 1403, the Rosenburg was destroyed and robbed of its former splendor.
But the past should not be completely forgotten. In 1936 and 1937, the remains of the old castle were dug out of the ground and lovingly preserved - a truly honorable undertaking that secures Rosenburg a fitting place in the history books.
Access
Always accessible. The castle can be reached on foot from Herisau in an hour. But the most beautiful routes take longer.
