The Lords of Dübendorf are documented since the beginning of the 12th century and were the lords of the castle since the construction of the castle at Dübelstein. At that time, the castle had a mighty keep. In the 14th century, the Dübelstein family died out, leaving the Hofstetters to inherit it. After the castle fell to the Schwyzers, it was devastated but immediately rebuilt. After further destruction following the execution of the then lord of the castle, Hans Waldmann, and reconstruction, Rudolf Escher, the well-known mayor of Zurich, made the castle habitable again. It was not until the 17th century that the castle fell into disrepair and was only used as a quarry.
The ruins were excavated and preserved in the middle of the 20th century. The Pro Waldmannsburg Foundation is the current owner of the remaining walls.
