A Roman fortification is located just outside of Pfäffikon in the area of Irgendhausen. It is part of the rear line of the Danube-Iller-Rhine Limes from the time of late antiquity in the 4th century.

After centuries of stone theft, it was restored and expanded in the 19th century following extensive excavations. The remains of a Roman farm that had stood on the same site two hundred years previously were also discovered.

The fort probably served to protect the traffic routes and as an intermediate storage facility for valuable goods and supplies. Since the lake extended further up to the fort at that time, a roadblock could be set up with just a few men.

Not only is the complex one of the best preserved in the canton of Zurich, the view of Lake Pfäffikon also invites you to linger and have a barbecue.

The gold treasure of Pfäffikon

The Zurich Oberland offers a real treasure trove of ancient myths and legends. One of them tells of a legendary treasure of gold that is said to be buried under the Roman fort of Pfäffikon. Many years ago, a poor farmer dared to dig there in the middle of the night. And he was in for a surprise, as the proverbial "blue miracle" did.

Location and directions

In late antiquity, the area around Irgendhausen belonged to the province of Maxima Sequanorum. The Castellum is located just outside of Pfäffikon in the direction of Auslikon, near the shores of Lake Pfäffikon. It is located on the former Roman road between Kempraten (Centum Prata) and Rapperswil-Jona, which led to Oberwinterthur (Vitudurum).
