The largest open-air museum in Switzerland is located in Hofstetten near Brienz. Historical buildings from all parts of Switzerland have been reconstructed here and embedded in a bygone world full of gardens, trees and original animal species. Traditional crafts are still skillfully maintained here.
background
There are now over 100 buildings on the Ballenberg, after starting with 16 museum objects when it opened in 1978. The museum invites you to stroll, marvel and learn and attracts a quarter of a million visitors every year.
Baking, cheese making, wood carving, hat making, beekeeping, firing, bobbin lace making, cooking, grinding, saddling, spinning, embroidery, pottery, weaving: the past comes to life again through the traditional crafts that visitors can watch. A short trip would be far too short to delve into the depths of the past and do justice to its diversity.
Access
The museum is easily accessible by car or bus.
