In Säuliamt there is a dense forest of relics from the Stone Age. The diversity is particularly evident on the Homberg near Mettmenstetten. On the wooded plateau between Mettmenstetten and Herferswil there are five objects to marvel at. At Wellenweid there is a row of stones, then a spectacular single menhir and a short row of stones right next to it. In addition, there is an impressive cromlech with several radial alignments and a Gnappstein to visit.

Megalithic row

The megalithic row is L-shaped and is approximately 37 m x 7 m long. The shorter leg is aligned west-east and the longer leg north-south. It would be too easy to simply label the object as a wall. There are several offshoots in an easterly direction as well as a semi-circular approach on the west side. The row is one of the most impressive finds in the Knonaueramt.

Single menhir

The menhir stands on the edge of a horse pasture. The slab was found under the ground surface by the landowner in 2000 and placed at its current location. It is not clear where the original location was. Nevertheless, the menhir appears authentic considering the many finds nearby.

Stone circle

Experts call stone circles cromlechs. They are located north of the Homberger Weid and can only be clearly interpreted when viewed up close. In the center there are eight large blocks that form a circle with a diameter of 8 meters. The entire structure, consisting of several concentric circles, is almost 80 meters in size. The structure probably served a cult-astronomical calendar function. This theory is contradicted by the fact that the individual objects are placed in an astronomical imprecise manner and that the cult character may have been the only focus.

Gnappstein

On the southern edge of the Homberger Weid there is a Gnappstein. A large conglomerate slab lies at an angle on a block. It is hard to imagine that this was formed naturally in this way. The conglomerate probably used to be higher up on the block so that it could be used for cult purposes in rocking movements.

Location and access

All objects except the single menhir require good footwear and a little patience when searching. Halfway between Mettemenstetten and Türlen, at the height of Rifferswil, turn onto Hombergstrasse and drive directly to the single menhir.
