In the 13th century, the Laubenberg family once had their seat above the Iller. But their neighbour, Count Hugo von Monfort, constantly annoyed, plundered and harassed them. So Kaspar von Laubenberg had to almost rebuild the fortress at the end of the 15th century. The Laubenbergs later moved their seat to Rauhenzell Castle and let the ancestral castle fall into disrepair.

background

The mighty artillery tower on the west side is particularly impressive. It was built after the count's raids and protected the castle from then on. The east side of the keep has been completely reconstructed and can be admired today.

Ghosts of Sonthofen

In the lower cattle market square in Sonthofen, which lies towards Hindelang, one often heard wild quarrels and noise at night and saw all kinds of strange fire phenomena. Wild sparks flew all over the place and "whole lines of fire" flew at each other; for the spirits of those who had cheated in the cattle trade at the market during their lifetime were fighting and arguing there.
