Hidden deep in the Lorzentobel ravine lies the ruins of Wildenburg castle in the Lorzental valley of the municipality of Baar. It was built on a rocky outcrop high above the Lorze and Schwerzenbach rivers.
It's not just the beautiful ruins that are worth the trip. The waters that meander through the Lorzental in waterfalls and the beautiful forest landscape are particularly inviting for a rest and a barbecue.
Story
The ruins were built in the 13th century by the Lords of Hünenberg, who were vassals of the Counts of Kyburg and Habsburg. The castle was ideally located and controlled access via the Lorzentobel Bridge. The original stone ring and wooden buildings were supplemented over time by a keep and a palace.
The castle was first mentioned in 1309. Like the castle in Hünenberg, the castle was probably destroyed after the Battle of Sempach, which was lost by the Habsburgs. Nevertheless, Rudolf von Hünenberg also describes himself as living in Wildenburg in 1409. Later, however, the castle was left to decay and used as a quarry.
Directions
There is a car park at the beginning of the Lorzen Bridge. Then you walk steeply up and down through the forest to the castle ruins. Good footwear is required when it is wet. You should not leave the paths due to the steep slopes.
