One of the most impressive geological sites in the Valais and protected by the Swiss Confederation. When the Eringer glacier retreated during the Würm Ice Age up to 10,000 years ago, the glacier tongues remained in the valleys of the Borgne and Dixence. The pressure caused the lateral moraines to be compressed so much that the cavities between the boulders gradually filled with sand and clay. This created a concrete moraine.
It is already clear that the pyramids are battling against natural decay and are being decapitated step by step. Until then, their bizarre beauty is considered unique.
The Fairy of Evolène
A fairy lived under a rock in the Val d'Hérens in the Valais. She missed contact with people, who mocked her. Only the woodcutter Antoine liked her, and he asked for her hand in marriage. She said yes, on the condition that he never mocked her.
The two lived happily, became wealthy thanks to the fairy and had a daughter. But the people in the village were jealous. Evil rumors bothered Antoine so much that he finally insulted the fairy. She disappeared and only returned to him when he overcame himself and kissed a horrible snake at midnight. And they lived happily ever after...
Position
The earth pyramids are in the Val d'Hérens and can be reached by car from Sion towards the village of Euseigne. The passing places on the road can be used to stop and admire the pyramids.
